My New Band Believe Album Cover
My New Band Believe is the new album by the former bassist/vocalist Cameron Picton from black MIDI's new project called My New Band Believe.
After the break up of Black Midi in 2024 I haven't really followed anything from any members of the band so I hadn't got behind the hype for this new project.
On the DND alignment chart I think this album would fall under Chaotic Good. Slightly jarring but organic and folky at the same time. For fans of Black MIDI, Wings, caroline
The album opener Target Practice starts off with a really nice vocal line "Dont cry you deserve this" which swells into a BCNR type track with some soothing baroque pop strings and a stab of noise, before an abrupt ending and straight into the next track.
The next track In the Blink of an Eye is faster moving, and creates an unsettling dream/nightmare feel. with an acoustic finger picked guitar with some call backs to the previous songs lyrically.
Another stand out track is Love Story, which is also a single from the album released on the 17th of March. Love story has a calm, slightly spooky ballroom piano led intro before the vocals.
The song has a waltzy feel and has one of my favourite lyrics: "Do you want potatoes or rice tonight?" This is such a good lyric (and important question) in the context of the song which might feel a bit cheesy elsewhere.
The song has a break in the middle before coming back to the outro. It really adds to the live feel of the recording of this album and you can hear the band creaking about before finishing the song.
Overall the album can seem a bit scattergun with random and abrupt changes but still seems to land and stick to its guns thematically. Cameron's songs in black MIDI were crying out for this discordant acoustic approach and working with the band caroline has done wonders for this album.
The band are currently on a mostly sold out UK tour and I am going to see them on the 30th of April at The White Hotel in Manchester and again at Green Man Festival in August.
